International Congress in Luxembourg from February 7 to February 9, 2019

The congress is co-organized by the Department “Religion, Communication, Education” of the Luxembourg School of Religion & Society (Prof. Jean Ehret, Ph.D., Ph.D.), the Chair of music pedagogy of the University of Würzburg (Prof. Friedhelm Brusniak, Ph.D.) and the Faculté des Lettres, des Sciences Humaines, des Arts et des Sciences de l'Éducation of the University of Luxembourg (Prof. Damien Sagrillo, Ph.D.).

TOPIC

The congress will examine the role of music and its “spiritual power”, especially in ecumenism.
One could ask, first of all, in what its “spiritual power” consists, how it can be perceived, how it emerges, how it affects people. Can this “power” be moulded if necessary, and, if so, how? To what extent does the music refer beyond itself? Does it possess its own relation to tran- scendence?
These considerations are followed by concrete inquiries about the role music has played in the development of denominational identities and what means have been used for this pur- pose. How might music succeed in building bridges between denominations? To what extent are denominational differences in music still relevant or have they become obsolete? With re- gard to the “spiritual power of music,” what significance do ecclesiastical teaching, the texts of the Holy Scriptures, or even texts specially composed for musical works have? In this context, special attention will also be given to the work of the composer Heinz Werner Zimmermann (* 1930).
This topic can be examined from different perspectives: that of music and church history, theology, philosophy, music education, aesthetics (of reception) or interpretation.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Interested scientists are invited to submit their proposals for a presentation (20 min.; the pro- posal must not exceed 1500 characters, spaces included) by email (kongress2019@lsrs.lu). The deadline for entries is November 1, 2018. We will send out final confirmations on No- vember 20, 2018.
The conference fees will be waived for the lecturers. Travel, food and accommodation have to be paid for by yourself.
A publication of any revised presentations accepted by the scientific advisory board is planned in a respective series.
