War and Peace in the Late Middle Ages
19th Biennial Conference of the American Cusanus Society and the International Seminar on Pre-Reformation Theology, United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg PA
29 Sept – 1 Oct 2023 (hybrid)

CALL FOR PAPERS

The American Cusanus Society, continuing its longstanding partnership with United Lutheran Seminary, will hold its 19th biennial conference in Gettysburg PA on Friday, 29 September to Sunday, 1 October 2023, with a special pre-conference presentation the evening of Thursday, 28 September at Seminary Ridge Museum. Our focus will be on war, peace, and religious violence during the long late Middle Ages in Europe and the Middle East, although the pre-conference presentation will consider American history. While we will look closely at the life and works of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464), we will also consider major events before, during, and after his career. Our goal is to reevaluate options and actions for war and peace during this crucible moment in history with an eye, as always, toward historical lessons for the contemporary world.

We seek proposals for 20-minute papers on these topics. Please send to Christopher Bellitto, cbellitt@kean.edu by 1 February 2023, with an indication whether you plan to attend in-person or via our hybrid mode. There may be some funding for international travel.
